Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a colorful, friendly country in Central America which has been called the "Switzerland of the Americas," thanks to its mountains and its political freedom. It is a small country with both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, and is exceptional in that it has many environments which can be visited even on a short stay: rain forests, cloud forests, unspoiled beaches, coral reefs, white water rivers and volcanoes can all be reached within a few hours by car from San Jose. Costa Rica enjoys one of the highest standards of living of the Central American countries. The health record is excellent; illiteracy is extremely low. Since 1948, Costa Rica has had no army.
