Learn Spanish in BARCELONA

Barcelona is a wonderful sophisticated city with style, allure and an unbelievable number of things to see and do. It lies at the foot of Mount Montjuic where the famous Mies van de Rohe Pavilion is found as well as the Pueblo Español, a Spanish village in which the houses, streets and squares are representative of all of Spain. "Downtown" in the city, culture lovers can get their fill of paintings by famous artists such as Picasso and Miro among others. Or, they can visit the many architectural wonders which the famous architect Gaudi created around the city. The old part of the city, known as the "Barrio Gotico", with its old city walls, narrow streets and beautiful monuments, is well worth a visit. During the evening a stroll along the elegant boulevard Las Ramblas is an experience not soon to be forgotten. And do not forget the alluring Mediterranean sea, which always invites you for a refreshing dip. Barcelona is a metropolis where you will quickly feel at home. There is also plenty to do around Barcelona: nearby mountain ranges (Montserrat, Sierra Montseny and a little further away the Pyrennes) are quiet, green and dotted with picturesque villages. For the beach lovers: Arenys del Mar in the Costa Brava and Sitges with it's famous whitewashed houses in the Costa Dorada, offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sun and the sea within easy reach of the city. Barcelona is the capital of Catalunya so you will also have a chance to experience the culture and cuisine of this wonderful region.

Students at IH Barcelona come from all over the world. The majority of them are European, with a smaller percentage of Americans, Asians and even some Brazilians who come all the way to Barcelona to take courses at IH.    The average age of the student body is 24 - 28, although they often have students as young as 17 and as old as 75.   The majority of the students are young professional people who need Spanish to develop their careers. But they also host a large proportion of students who are still full-time students in their own countries as well as an increasing number of people who are simply learning Spanish as a hobby.

Standard Intensive Spanish Course: max 10 students per class (average 8).  Course consists of 4 lessons per day (9:30 AM to 1:30 PM*), Monday through Friday.  A program of social activities is included in the prices.  * In July and August the school reserves the right to schedule classes in the afternoon.

Accommodations  2008

Accommodations are offered in host families (single room or double room occupancy available for students traveling together), in shared apartments or in studio apartments (studios are only available on a monthly basis).  There is also a limited number of "Executive Host Families" available, these families live in larger apartments and offer a private room, private bathroom as well as laundry service. The pricing for executive family stays reflects the extra services provided.

Airport Transfers: From Barcelona airport are available upon request and at an additional charge of USD 124 each way.

Activities

International House organizes a varied program of social activities for their Spanish language students. Activities regularly include:

• Welcome and farewell parties
• Lectures on topics of interest
• Concerts by local musicians
• Visits to discos
• Accompanied visits to places of interest in and around Barcelona
• Video films in Spanish
• Language Exchange evenings with our Spanish students of English, French and German.

Most of the activities are offered free of charge, but excursions and outings involve a nominal extra charge.

The school will also help students plan their own social activities if they want to do something extra like go to a swimming pool or gymnasium, go to a movie or go and watch Barcelona Football Club.

Additionally during the summer months there is a full day excursion every 2 weeks to places such as the Salvador Dalí museum in Figueres, the provincial capitals of Girona and Tarragona, the beaches of the Costa Brava or the sacred mountain of Montserrat.
