The town's focal point is the "Balcon de Europa," a cliff-top promenade that looks out over 14 km. of coastline. At night, the terrace becomes a lively "paseo" where you can watch and be watched. Sidewalk cafes border the promenade. Below the cliff are a series of small coves and long beaches mostly of gravel and coarse sand. Nerja can be reached by frequent buses from Malaga (there are 10 each day; the trip lasts 1 1/2 hr.) Granada is just 1 1/2 hours away, Morocco 4 hours, Marbella, Fuengirola and Torremolinos, 2 hours.

Escuela de Idiomas Nerja

Escuela de Idiomas Nerja, founded in 1980, is a picturesque and comfortable Spanish language school, complete with its own shady patio and terraces full of flowers. It is located in a pedestrian area in the heart of the old town in a typically Andalusian house set amidst beautiful gardens. The Spanish language school offers 14 modern and well equipped classrooms, a book shop, library, multimedia room and a cafeteria. Internet and fax machine access are available (though not free). Wi-Fi access is provided.  Shops, bars and magnificent beaches are just around the corner. It doesn't matter where you are staying. Everything is within walking distance. The owners, Luis Carrion and Renate Urban, give a personal touch to the whole operation and they make sure students receive personal attention. Here you will feel at home, and the atmosphere is relaxed and informal.

Intensive Spanish Course / Group 10 --- 20 Spanish lessons per week, maximum of 10 students per class. Offered at all levels from beginner to advanced (beginners have specific starting dates, see below). Prices include: written and oral assessment test on arrival, number of lessons as stated (each lesson= 1 hour), welcome orientation and school get-togethers, continuous assessment during the course, certificate of completion/diploma and seminars on Spanish Culture.  Minimum enrollment: 1 week. Maximum enrollment: 32 weeks.   Prices:    1 week: USD 390;   2 weeks: USD 622;   3 weeks:  USD 815;   4 weeks: USD 998;   Extra week: USD 232;   8 weeks: USD 1,730;  12 weeks: USD 2,448.

Super Intensive Spanish Course Mini-Group 6 --- 30 Spanish lessons per week, maximum of 6 students per class.  Offered at all levels from beginner to advanced (beginners have specific starting dates, see below). Prices include: written and oral assessment test on arrival, number of lessons as stated (each lesson= 1 hour), welcome orientation and school get-togethers, continuous assessment during the course, certificate of completion/diploma and seminars on Spanish Culture.  Minimum enrollment: 1 week. Spanish Group Courses Starting Dates 2012:  Full beginners may only start on the following dates, all other levels may start ANY Monday:

Holidays 2012:  28 February, 6 April, 1 May, 15 August, 12 October, 1 November.  No classes are held during holidays. Group classes missed due to holidays are not made up.  One-to-one classes missed due to holidays are made up during the rest of the week.   School and Residence will be closed from 22 December 2012 until 6 January 2013.

One-to-One Spanish Lessons: Tailor Made courses catering to the specific interests of the student.  For executives, professionals and students who require a highly intensive and specialized program. General Spanish, Spanish for trade, tourism, business, banking, law and medicine or preparation for specific exams ("A Levels" or others).  20 or 30 hours of Spanish classes from Monday to Friday. Course Length: 1 to 12 weeks. Airport pick-up service from Malaga included.

              Starting dates 2012:  Courses begin every Monday.
               Price:     Option A:  20 lessons per week: USD 1,150 per week.     -     Option B:  30 lessons per week: USD 1,670 per week.
 

Other Spanish Courses Available:

Spanish and Flamenco/ Spanish and Salsa:  A combination course consisting of the Intensive Spanish Course (20 lessons per week) during the mornings and 5+ hours of either Flamenco or Salsa lessons per week in the afternoon.

Spanish Teachers' Refresher Course --- a 1 week 30 hour intensive Spanish course focusing on the practical aspects of teaching Spanish as a foreign language, methodology and on the historical/social realities of Spain.
               Starting dates 2012:   23 January, 26 March, 30 April, 21 May, 30 July, and 24 Sept. 

               Price:  1 week program: USD 680.
Important Note: For those teachers that cannot attend during the dates listed above, this program is also offered as a tailor made course, starting every Monday.  Students attend the Intensive Spanish program listed above plus 5 hours of private lessons per week focusing on the practical aspects of teaching Spanish as a foreign language, methodology and on the historical/social realities of Spain.

Spanish Program for Seniors - Club 50:  A two week cultural experience with activities included.  A program designed for people over 50 years of age ready to have a new experience in the south of Spain to learn our language in an enjoyable and encouraging way. This program includes a two week package of activities with a full day trip on Saturday. Learn to shop at a local market, make a Paella and socialize with other mature student during a 2 week relaxing Spanish course designed just for your age group. 15 hours of classes per week from Monday to Friday.  Course length:  2 weeks with three different learning levels.

                Starting dates 2012:   6 February,  19 March,  16 April,  7 May,  4 June,  16 July,  20 August,  3 September,  15 October, 5 November.

Accommodations 2012:

A wide range of accommodations is offered in Nerja: Host families, shared apartments, a newly built school residence and individual apartments are available:

Host Family **--- Single Room, half board (breakfast and lunch):    2 weeks: USD 606;   3 weeks: USD 906;   4 weeks: USD 1,206;   Extra wks: USD 302.

Host Family **--- Double Room, half board (breakfast and lunch):  2 weeks: USD 556;   3 weeks: USD 840;    4 weeks: USD 1,112;   Extra wks: USD 280.  (Double room prices are per person - double rooms may only be booked by two students traveling together)

** Important Note:  High season surcharge applies during the summer months - please add USD 40 per week to all host family accommodations during July, August and September.

Shared Apartments --- Single room, use of kitchen, no meals.

School Residence "Club Costa Nerja": Located 3 minutes walking distance from the school, it is equipped with a cafeteria, roof-top pool and sun terrace, 21 single/double rooms with private bath, and 9 single "Premium" rooms with private bath, TV, fridge, and coffee makers. Meals are not included (starting on 2011 Continental Breakfast is included!). Daily maid service is included in prices. Double room rates available upon request:

Apartments --- 1 bedroom apartments for one or two people traveling together, no meals. Rates available upon request. Please specify size and category of apartment type desired (basic, standard, luxury).

Hotels --- All categories. Rates available upon request.

Activities 2012:

To get most out of their stay, students are encouraged to take an active part in the cultural and social activities offered by the school as an essential part of their course. Flamenco dancing and cooking lessons, golf and other sports are available and accessible. All films, lectures and parties offered at the school are free, but a structured monthly activities program is offered for an additional fee (see below for prices). The program is varied and thorough, but there is always plenty of free time to enjoy the many attractions offered by Nerja and its surroundings.  The activity package offers and array of activities and excursions at a very attractive price. It varies from week to week, but below you will find a sample of the activities offered during the course of the year:

• Visits: to the prehistoric caves of Nerja and nearby villages of Frigiliana (a definite must!), Almuņecar and Competa (Wednesdays on a rotating basis).
• Excursions: to Granada, Ronda, Marbella, Seville, Cordoba, Malaga and other cities of cultural interest (Saturdays on a rotating basis).
• Sports: swimming, volley-ball, golf, sailing, tennis, etc. (Sports program varies by season).
• Social Life: Spanish films, parties, barbecues, concerts and other interesting shows.
• Sevillana Classes (Flamenco) at a local institute (usually one evening a week) and Spanish cooking classes (usually twice a month).

Detailed schedules on the complete monthly program will be provided on your first day of class. You may choose to participate for any number of weeks you desire or simply join a portion of the activities or excursions offered. If you choose to participate in the whole program you can make the arrangements at the time of your course registration or you may also sign up upon arrival at the school. If you choose to participate only on selected parts of the program the arrangements can only be made upon arrival at the school.

Airport Transfers: School arranged transfers from Malaga airport are available at an additional charge of USD 140 one way or USD 250 round trip.
